ASSESSMENTS AND EXAMS

PROVINCIAL ASSESSMENTS 2019 – 2020

There have been recent, significant changes to the Ministry of Education assessments. For the 2019 – 2020 school year, all grade 10 students are required to write both a Numeracy, and a Literacy assessment. These are graduation requirements. Grade 10 students will be provided opportunities to view and try sample assessments during their math or english classes, and are encouraged to practice the assessments outside of class time.

These assessments are meant to be a review of acquired skills up to the end of Grade 9…Both the Numeracy and Literacy assessments are electronic, meaning they are completed by the student using a school computer. The Numeracy assessment has a paper component for students to demonstrate their understanding on two long-answer problems.

The only Provincial exam that current grade 12 students are required to write is the Numeracy assessment. If the student has not yet written it during their grade 10 or 11 year, they must complete it this school year to be able to graduate. A grade 12 student wishing to improve their Numeracy assessment result, and has not completed three attempts, may do so this year.

Grade 11 students who have not yet written the assessment. Or who have only attempted the Numeracy assessment once, are encouraged to write it this year.

All students have up to three attempts to write the Provincial Numeracy Assessment before they graduate.

Students enrolled in English 12 or FRAL 12 for the 2019-20 school year, DO NOT need to write a Provincial Exam for either of these courses. Only students enrolled in either of these courses, or Communications 12, during the 2018-19 school year may write these exams. (Because they didn’t complete the exam prior to June 30, or are wishing to re-write their exam)

There are three assessment time frames set out by the Ministry of Education:

November 4 – 12           2019

January 20 – 24            2019

April 14 – 20                  2020
